Poor Man's Stormtrooper Helmet

What a perfect idea for a budget Halloween costume for any college student (or any frugal Star Wars geek) to wear this year.

These are the shapes I cut out of them to use. Pieces A and B are cut from the first milk jug and then piece C is cut from the second milk jug. This really was a prototype, so next time I think I'd go for a taller piece as section C. I guess it depends on the size of the head you're making it for though.

I used hot hotglue, rather than the low temp stuff, in order to try and secure the pieces together more firmly. As you can see, piece A was the lower front and sides of the helmet and piece C is the front of the helmet from the nose up. The pouring top part of the milk jug had to be cut off to make piece C, so to cover up that and make the helmet a bit more aesthetically pleasing I cut out the circular indent from the side bit that was left over from first milk jug. This fitted in nicely to fill that hole.

Try it on and double check the positioning of the Eye holes. (note= Make sure they're ascetically pleasing, and usable for vision.)

I hole punched the back of the two protruding side panels so that I could put in elastic to hold it on. It's not a "full helmet", but it is significantly more than a mask. I then glued the two lids of the milk jugs on either side of the mouth part.

I had a can of white spray paint, so I used that on it. You could paint it with acrylic craft paint though, or if you are smart then you could deliberately get the totally opaque white milk jugs to start with!

Here it is painted up with black, white and grey craft paint. I decided at the last minute to put the ear cover things on (they are made from the bottom plastic sections from the containers you get from the 50cent toy dispensers. The horizontal black line around the forehead is just a strip of black electrical tape.

National Cathedral's Vader Gargoyle

Did you know you can find a bust of Darth Vader among the many stoneworks on the United States' National Cathedral?

Darth Vader is one of the numerous carved grotesques on the Cathedral. Like gargoyles, grotesques carry rain water away from the building’s walls. Gargoyles carry away excess water via pipes running through their mouths; grotesques deflect rainwater by bouncing it off the top of their heads, noses or other projecting parts, and away from the stone walls.

How did Darth Vader, a fictional villain from the Star Wars movies, end up on the wall of Washington National Cathedral?

In the 1980s the Cathedral, with National Geographic World magazine, sponsored a competition for children to design decorative sculpture for the Cathedral. The third-place winner was Christopher Rader of Kearney, Nebraska who submitted a drawing of this futuristic representation of evil. Darth Vader was placed on the northwest tower with the other winning designs: a raccoon, a girl with pigtails and braces and a man with large teeth and an umbrella.

The fierce head was sculpted by Jay Hall Carpenter and carved by Patrick J. Plunkett.

Locating Darth Vader on the National Cathedral

To find Darth Vader, you have to leave the building through the ramp entrance. This is located at the northwest corner of the nave, through the double wooden doors of Lincoln Bay (behind the statue of Abraham Lincoln). Go down the ramp, and step into the parking lot. Then, turn around and look back up at the tower closest to you. He is almost impossible to see without the assistance of binoculars.

Waaaaay up, almost at the top of the tower is a gablet, or small peaked roof, located between the two huge louvered arches. At the bottom of each slope of this roof is a carved grotesque. Darth Vader is on the north, or right-hand side.

Another way to look is to start at the top of the tower. There are two large pinnacles, or points, on the corners of the tower and a much smaller one in the center. Come down from the small, center pinnacle and the gablet is the first one you will find.

There is a carved skull situated on a gablet much closer to the ground which is often mistaken for Darth Vader. From this skull, Darth Vader is up and to the left.

That is, when Luke Skywalker unmasked his father, he would have seen a skull and crossbones staring back at him. Kaws Darth Vader toys were selling for $150 at Kaws' Original Fake Store in Tokyo, Japan.

Personally, this is probably my favorite Star Wars collectible action figure. It looks totally badass in an "I'm going to dismember you with my shiny crimson-bladed lightsaber" kind of way yet cute in an "awe look at the wittle puppy" kind of way at the same time.
